A Reflection for Catechists

It is difficult to try and use categories to identify where you are as a catechist; however, they can be helpful to a degree. Use the chart created by Catechetical Foundations as a reflection for you as a PERSON, then as a CATECHIST.

This concept is expanded upon at length in our online course, Catechist Development.

The Timocratic Man:

  • Honor before comfort or health and wealth
  • A handshake is all that is necessary for a contract
  • Duty, not self desire
  • A man of true leisure

The Oligarchic Man:

  • Acts out of self interest; for health and wealth
  • Does right because of the above statement, therefore there is a limit for him
  • Duty, but usually only when it may benefit him. He is pragmatic.

The Democratic Man:

  • Acts out of personal interest and comfort
  • Avoid difficulties
  • Changes his opinion as the wind blows; and is an extreme pragmatist and rationalist.
  • Idleness rather than leisure.
Implications of this person as the catechist:

  • Receives the sacraments more than the minimum requirements out of love for our Lord
  • Prays daily; really prays daily out of love for our Lord
  • Scripture and Church Documents are his primary sources for catechesis
  • Does not approach catechism class as, “how do I fill this hour?”
  • Prays for his students out of love for our Lord
Implications of this person as the catechist:

  • Receives the sacraments as obligations and at a minimum requirement
  • Prays because he should on a pretty regular basis
  • Writes catechetical plans and then find Scripture to fit his plan; least amount of work for the desired outcome
  • Finds the fastest, easiest, then most effective way to fill his session time.
  • Remembers to pray before and after each session and takes intentions, but rarely acts on them.
Implications of this person as the catechist:

  • Receives the sacraments as obligations only and at a minimum requirement. Also has very little commitment to do so.
  • Does not pray on a regular basis
  • Comes up with catechetical plans last minute, grabs someone else’s plan with little preparation, and rarely uses Scripture.
  • Most of the class is activity based, not content based
  • Class prayer is empty and lifeless.
